I am Jessy Alexander BECIUS. I come from Haiti. Born and raised in the countryside, I never stop dreaming of childhood life in this environment. Getting up with my big brother to wander the field still covered in dew and watch over my mother’s herd, playing hide and seek in my father’s cassava field, and drinking fresh water from the canary after a day of adventures were my daily life. The harvest seasons punctuated our lives as the rain fell just in time to bless our marriage with the earth. And, to keep this heritage, I studied agronomy. But you know, this precious connection is beginning to crumble under the impact of the climate crisis.

For example, in my father’s cassava field, only a few solitary plants remain, the fun and games of childhood have become a distant memory. The harvest becomes more and more difficult, and mother’s livestock is wiped out, the field having become an arid savannah. Rain becomes terribly rare, and we have difficulty drawing water from the spring to quench our thirst.

I observe an almost uncertain future for these beings and these things that I loved so much. This is why I want to see them more resilient in the face of climate change. I helped my family build a rainwater storage tank to help combat the drought, but it is still not enough. Many other rural families experience the same despair which makes us understand the need for urgent action.

So, join us to make our voices heard and support these families, who, despite their innocence in the face of the crisis, are sadly suffering its consequences.
