The Caribbean Climate Network, Grenada Chapter, was established in 2022 as part of the broader Caribbean Climate Network (CCN) under 350.org. Initially operating as a grassroots group, we are in the process of formalizing ourselves as a non-governmental organization (NGO) later this year. Our mission as an environmental NGO is to assist Grenada and the wider Tri-island State in combating and adapting to climate change. We focus on preserving and enhancing our natural environment through nature-based climate solutions, particularly reforestation, to safeguard our island’s biodiversity and enhance community resilience against the climate crisis.
In 2023, we launched our Facebook page where we promoted tree planting as a vital step in addressing the climate crisis. We also shared information on funding opportunities for renewable energy, water management, and climate-smart building solutions for individuals and businesses in Grenada. Additionally, we actively observe International Biodiversity Day, World Environment Day, and Earth Day.
The Grenada Chapter has locally-led regional campaigns such as ‘Action for Adaptation’ and ‘Power Up’. This year, we participated in the ‘I Love the Caribbean’ Campaign, fostering appreciation for Grenada while highlighting the impacts of the climate crisis on our island.
Furthermore, we leveraged local, regional, and international heatwave occurrences to educate citizens about how they can take care of themselves and potential future climate scenarios if current trends persist. Unfortunately, further effects of the climate crisis presented themselves. On July 1, parts of Grenada were devastated by Hurricane Beryl, highlighting the increased hurricane activity as a consequence of climate change. In response, the Grenada chapter supported the immediate needs of the people and the government of Grenada by sharing a list of urgent requirements and providing assistance wherever possible.
