Hurricane Melissa has swept through the Caribbean with a force that no community should have to endure. Jamaica and Haiti have been among the hardest hit countries, with families now grieving loved ones, rebuilding homes from rubble and trying to find hope.

And yet, these communities did not cause the crisis they are now suffering through.
The climate crisis is driven overwhelmingly by fossil fuel corporations and wealthy nations that continue to put profit above human life. Meanwhile, the Caribbean people who have contributed the least to this crisis, are left to face its most devastating consequences.

But there is something powerful happening on the ground: local organizers and climate advocates, including our 350.org group leaders, are taking action to support one another, to rebuild, and to rise.
And they need our support.

Haiti: Supporting Families in Their Most Urgent Hour

In Haiti, the storm caused severe damage in the southeast, especially in Savane-du-Bois, Marigot, Jacmel, and Lagosseline. Winds ripped through farmland and destroyed banana fields, jeopardizing both livelihoods and local food supply. The losses have been deep with dozens dead and many still missing.

Our leaders at the Haiti Climate Network are coordinating relief efforts directly in the affected communities. Donations will go toward:

  • Essential supplies for families who lost everything
  • Supporting displaced community members
  • Rebuilding basic living infrastructure
  • Helping restore farmland and food sources

Your contribution goes directly to Haitian organizers who are rooted in the community and know what is needed most.

Jamaica: Helping Families Recover, Rebuild, and Stand Strong

In Jamaica, Plakortis Earth Cafe led by Tracey Edwards, is helping families who have lost their roofs, their homes, and their stability. Hurricane Melissa landed with wind speeds up to 185 miles per hour, tearing through communities and leaving many without shelter.

Funds raised will help provide:

  • Cement, steel, blocks, sand, gravel, and roofing materials
  • Food and school supplies
  • Temporary rent support for families with nowhere to stay
  • Continued care packages for those still without basic necessities

Already, leaders of Plakortis have been delivering care packages with emergency supplies, and materials for rebuilding have begun arriving, but there is still so much more to do. Homes are still open to the sky. Families are waiting for a path to recovery and they need our help to make this possible.
