Welcome to our August Newsletter! I’m sharing some quick updates with you from a very hot Guyana🥵. In the past weeks and months, many of us have endured record high temperatures and heat waves in our countries. Can you imagine if this got worse?

This is why we’ve been working hard to mobilize people across the region and with our global partners to power up a renewable energy revolution⚡. A revolution that’s urgently needed to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius and which ensures the resilience and survival of our Caribbean nations.

On November 3-4, when fossil fuel companies are set to announce their next round of quarterly profits and right before our leaders get together at the next UN global climate talks (COP28), people all over the world will organize actions to demand our governments to shift money and political power towards community-centered renewable projects.

In the Caribbean, we bear the burden of scorching heat waves, devastating storms, prolonged droughts, catastrophic floods, and soaring energy bills. People have lost their lives and homes while the fossil fuel industry shamelessly prioritizes their own profit, and keeps blocking real climate action. World leaders from the Global North continue to finance the oil and gas industry and fuel the disasters in the Caribbean. It is time our local leaders step up!

Communities worldwide are demanding a better alternative. At COP28, we need clear and real action for an immediate phase out of fossil fuels, and to generate 1.5 Terawatt (TW) of renewable energy installed capacity per year from 2030 onwards to stay in line with 1.5C of heating.

Let’s make sure world leaders commit to real climate action this year and fund the renewable energy transition we need to keep our region safe. A cleaner, more equitable world is within reach.
